How To Create A Huge File

You can create a file of any size using nothing more than what's supplied with Windows.

Start by converting the desired file size into hexadecimal notation.

You can use the Windows Calculator in Scientific mode do to this.

Suppose you want a file of 1 million bytes. Enter 1000000 in the calculator and click on the Hex option to convert it (1 million in hex is F4240.) Pad the result with zeroes at the left until the file size reaches eight digits—000F4240.

Now open a command prompt window.

Enter the command DEBUG BIGFILE.DAT and ignore the File not found message.

Type RCX and press Enter. Debug will display a colon prompt.
Enter the last four digits of the hexadecimal number you calculated (4240, in our example).
Type RBX and press Enter, then enter the first four digits of the hexadecimal size (000F, in our example).
Enter W for Write and Q for Quit. You've just created a 1-million-byte file using Debug.
Of course you can create a file of any desired size using the same technique.

Fast Security Enhancements part - 2

let's continue with the fast security enhancements..

6.  If you're using Outlook or Outlook Express, use the current version or one with the Outlook Security Update installed. The update and current versions patch numerous vulnerabilities.

7.  Buy anti virus software and keep it up to date. If you're not willing to pay, try Grisoft AVG Free Edition (Grisoft Inc., www.grisoft.com). And double check your AV with the free, online-only scanners available at www.pandasoftware.com/activescan and  http://housecall.trendmicro.com.

8. If you have a wireless network, turn on the security features: Use MAC filtering, turn off SSID broadcast, and even use WEP with the biggest key you can get. For more, check out our wireless section or see the expanded coverage in Your Unwired World in our next issue.

9.  Join a respectable e-mail security list, such as the one found at our own Security Super site at http://security.ziffdavis.com, so that you learn about emerging threats quickly and can take proper precautions.

10.
Be skeptical of things on the Internet. Don't assume that e-mail "From:" a particular person is actually from that person until you have further reason to believe it's that person. Don't assume that an attachment is what it says it is. Don't give out your password to anyone, even if that person claims to be from "support."

Fast Security Enhancements part - 1

Before you spend a time on security, there are many precautions you can take that will protect you against the most common threats.

1. Check Windows Update and Office Update regularly (http://office.microsoft.com/productupdates); have your Office CD ready. Windows Me, 2000, and XP users can configure automatic updates. Click on the Automatic Updates tab in the System control panel and choose the appropriate options.

2. Install a personal firewall. Both SyGate (www.sygate.com) and ZoneAlarm (www.zonelabs.com) offer free versions.

3. Install a free spyware blocker. Our Editors' Choice ("Spyware," April 22) was SpyBot Search & Destroy (http://security.kolla.de). SpyBot is also paranoid and ruthless in hunting out tracking cookies.

4. Block pop-up spam messages in Windows NT, 2000, or XP by disabling the Windows Messenger service (this is unrelated to the instant messaging program). Open Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services and you'll see Messenger. Right-click and go to Properties. Set Start-up Type to Disabled and press the Stop button. Bye-bye, spam pop-ups! Any good firewall will also stop them.

5. Use strong passwords and change them periodically. Passwords should have at least seven characters; use letters and numbers and have at least one symbol. A decent example would be f8izKro@l. This will make it much harder for anyone to gain access to your accounts.

Reducing the File Size of Word Documents

If you have make documents using MS Word and you make many formatting changes for the paragraph, fonts, page etc., you will see your file size gets bigger.

Microsoft Word saves files by blocking, so any change you made for your document it will create a new block with the new formatting and disappear the old block without deleting it from the file.

You can solve this problem.

1.       If you open your file and select File / Save As and give your file a new name, it will save  only the active blocks with out the old ones.

2.       If you compare the two files you will see a difference in size.

There is, however, a much easier way.

1.       Choose Tools.

2.       Options...

3.       Open the Save tab.

4.       Uncheck Allow Fast Saves.

This makes Word rewrite the entire document file from scratch each time it is saved.

The save command takes slightly longer, but your files can be drastically smaller (especially if you've done lots of formatting changes).

How to fix broken IE ??

Hello friends..

If your Internet Explorer is broken..
then Before you begin to even consider running a repair install of the OS, let’s try to do a repair on IE instead.

THE REPAIR PROCESS
1.  Start the Registry Editor by typing regedit from the Run box.

2.  Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Active Setup \ Installed Components \ {89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383} and then right-click the “IsInstalled value.”

3.  Click Modify. From there, you will change the value from 1 to 0.

4.  All right, go ahead and close the editor and reinstall IE from this location. /http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx
IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG

If messing with the registry and something goes horribly wrong, you can use “Last Known Good Configuration (F8 Safe Mode)” or a Restore Point to get back to where you were before, with your settings.

Then you can try again, this time taking care to watch the portion of the registry you are changing.
Most people who have troubles with this end up changing the wrong registry key.

I Hope this tut helps some members.

Convert your Notepad into your Digital Diary

HI friends....Here’s the simple steps to use the Windows Notepad as a simple digital diary.

1))  Open the Notepad and type .LOG and press enter.

2)) Save the file with any name of your choice and close it.

3)) Now open the file again in Notepad. Surprisingly the current date and time is inserted automatically after the .LOG line.

4))  Now you can write you daily dairy entry here.

5)) Each time you open the file, Notepad repeat the process, appending the time and date to the end of the file and placing the cursor below it.

And at last guys I have to inform you that By using F5, we can also bring current date and time but it lacks the automatic insertion of date and time..

What is "Trojan"?

Hi  friends This post is like a small introduction of Trojan..

Remember the Trojan Horse? Bad guys hid inside it until they could get into the city to do their evil deed.

A trojan computer program is similar.

It is a program which does an unauthorized function, hidden inside an authorized program.

It does something other than what it claims to do, usually something malicious (although not necessarily!), and it is intended by the author to do whatever it does.

If it's not intentional, its called a 'bug' or, in some cases, a feature.

Some virus scanning programs detect some trojans. Some virus scanning programs don't detect any trojans. No virus scanners detect all trojans.

Open CD using autorun

Hello friends...

If you want to make a autorun file for that CD..

follow steps below:

1)) Open notepad.

2)) now you write:

[autorun]OPEN=INSTALL\Setup_filename.EXEICON=INSTALL\Setup_filename.EXE
Now save it but not as a .txt file but as a .inf file.

But remember that, The "Setup_filename.EXE" MUST be replaced with the name of the setup file. And you     also need to rember that it is not all of the setup files there are called '.exe'  but some are called '.msi'

3)) Now burn your CD with the autorun .inf file included.

4)) Now set the CD in you CD drive and wait for the autorun to begin or If nothing happens just double-click on the CD drive in "This Computer"...

Start button trick

This tech trick is working only on windows 95 operating system..

follow the steps below:

1)) Click twice on the Start button so it has the dotted line around it.

2)) Then press the "Alt" and the "-" keys simultaneously.

This will bring up the option box that allows you to move or close the Start button.

If you choose move, you will have to use the arrow keys to move  it around the taskbar.

NOTE:
Moving it doesn't stay if you move the entire start bar with your mouse, and ending task on "explorer.exe" or rebooting will put it back in the corner.
